I ran into Ormonte, 20, on the Bethany College campus in Lindsborg, Kansas, just as the school's athletes were returning for the year. He is a sophomore basketball player and exercise science major from South Carolina.

Alice and George, both native Kansans, have been married for 53 years, and they’ve lived on this 30-acre property for the last 15. They couldn't love it more. Their son, Rolf (who I photographed with his new girlfriend, Kristen), also has a house on the property, and their daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons live just over a mile away as the crow flies.

Kristen is an actress who was supposed to be in Germany in May. Rolf is a travel writer who was supposed to be in Italy in May. Both are Kansans who, when they're not off traveling, return home to one-stoplight towns a little over an hour from each other. If the world hadn't stopped, they wouldn't have met. But, because of the pandemic, they were both at home in May in those little towns, and they went to the dating apps, assuming nothing would come of it.
